Michigan State Football's 5 Keys to Dominating the Big Ten This Season

As I sit here watching the early season practices unfold, I can't help but feel this could be Michigan State's year to truly dominate the Big Ten. Having followed Spartan football for over two decades, I've seen championship teams develop, and this squad has that special feel. The parallels between what makes a successful basketball team and a dominant football program might not be immediately obvious, but they're absolutely there. Take New Zealand's basketball team in the FIBA Asia Cup - their three-point shooting strategy offers fascinating insights that Michigan State could apply to their football approach this season.

Let me start with what I believe is the most crucial element - offensive consistency. Watching New Zealand's performance in the qualifiers really drove this home for me. They made 37 percent on 65-of-178 shooting from threes, which ranked third-best among all teams. That level of precision didn't happen by accident. For Michigan State, this translates directly to offensive execution. We need that same reliability in our passing game and red zone efficiency. Remember that February game where New Zealand launched 33 shots and made 13 against the Filipinos? That's the kind of performance we should expect from our offense - aggressive yet calculated. But then there's the Iraq game where they only went 9-of-34 from threes or 26 percent. Those inconsistent performances are exactly what we need to avoid if we want to win the conference.

The second key is what I call strategic persistence. What impressed me most about New Zealand's approach was their commitment to three-point shooting even when it wasn't falling. They understood it was part of their identity. Michigan State needs to embrace this mentality with our ground game. Even when we're facing stacked boxes or having an off day running the ball, we can't abandon what defines us. I've seen too many Spartan teams over the years get away from their core strengths when facing adversity. This season, we need to trust our system the way New Zealand trusts their shooters to keep shooting.

Third point - and this is something I feel strongly about - is adapting while staying true to your identity. New Zealand's three-point percentage dropped to 26% against Iraq, but they kept taking those shots because that's who they are. For Michigan State, this means we need to maintain our physical brand of football while making in-game adjustments. Our defense has to be versatile enough to handle the spread offenses we'll face while still bringing that classic Big Ten physicality. I remember watching some of our best teams under Dantonio - they could adjust their approach without losing their defensive identity. That balance is crucial.

The fourth element is what separates good teams from great ones - depth and rotation. New Zealand's ability to maintain their shooting percentage throughout the tournament speaks to their roster depth. Similarly, Michigan State's success will depend heavily on our second and third-string players. Having watched every practice I could get to this spring, I'm particularly excited about our defensive line rotation. We need players who can step up when starters need breathers, especially during those brutal November conference games. The teams that win championships are always the ones with the best depth.

Finally, there's the mental aspect. New Zealand's confidence in their three-point shooting, even after poor performances, demonstrates the championship mindset we need. I've spoken with several players during fall camp, and what strikes me is their collective belief. They're not just hoping to compete - they expect to dominate. That mental edge is what helped us win the Big Ten in 2013 and 2015, and it's what will carry us through tough road games at Penn State and Michigan this season.

Looking at our schedule and the talent we have returning, I genuinely believe this could be one of those special seasons. The pieces are there - experienced quarterback play, what I consider the best linebacker group in the conference, and what appears to be improved special teams. But more importantly, the mindset seems right. Just as New Zealand continues to trust their outside shooting regardless of early results, Michigan State needs to trust their process throughout what will undoubtedly be a challenging Big Ten schedule. If we can maintain our identity while making smart adjustments, there's no reason we can't hoist that championship trophy in Indianapolis come December. I've been waiting for a season like this since our last conference title, and something tells me this might just be our year. The foundation is there - now it's about execution week after week, trusting our system, and playing with the confidence of a team that knows they belong at the top of the conference.
